ARTIST STATEMENT

Mark Shelton can't remember a time when he wasn't creating art and he continues to make it his life long passion. He's a modern-contemporary Native-American artist who was born and raised in Moline, Illinois. After moving to Oregon in 1984 he became interested in both Fine and Graphic Art. He earned his AAS Degree from Portland Community College, his BFA with honors from Pratt Institute in New York City and has recently been certified as the Honorary Chinook Tribal Artist.

ARTIST BIO

Mark is currently involved in two separate series of paintings. The first series includes portraits of historically significant Indian Chiefs and prominent tribal members and the second series includes large scale landscapes that vary in sizes up to 60"x48". Both of the series are a result of a ten year study in colour, texture and emotional force. Mark's styles range from traditional to modern. The paintings consist of boldly applied acrylics on canvas in conjunction with collaged papers from around the world. The goal of mark's paintings is to involve the viewer as a participant in the mood and tone that is set in his work. He hopes his paintings will leave you with a sense of reverence for native peoples who have survived many hardships but have the resolve to maintain cultural integrity for the generations to follow.
